Olypmic village for curlers opens in Karuizawa

An Olympic satellite village that will house the curling teams competing in the Nagano Winter Games opened Wednesday in the summer resort town of Karuizawa.

At the same time, some 220 youngsters from 53 countries and territories opened a 16-day international youth camp, a program included in the Olympic Charter to promote the Olympic Movement.

About 120 athletes and officials are scheduled to move into the Karuizawa Satellite Olympic Village, located in a hotel at the foot of Mt. Asama and about 60 kilometers southeast of the city of Nagano.

Village mayor Nobue Miwa, speaking at an opening ceremony, said the community will do its best to assist the curlers during their stay in the remote village.

''Our village is small compared with the main village, but we will do our best to help athletes and officials feel at home and relax.''

The ceremony, attended by about 110 people, featured the raising of the flags of the nine Olympic teams competing in curling, which will make its Olympic debut at the Nagano Games.

The lion's share of about 3,000 Olympic athletes and officials are expected to stay at the main Olympic village in Nagano. The skiers have been lodged in private inns in Hakuba, west of Nagano. The biathletes have checked into hotels in the hot-spring resort of Nozawa Onsen in Nagano's northeastern outskirts.
