Moseley, Pelchat take lead in Olympic freestyle
9:30- Start
American Jonny Moseley breezed into the men's final while Canadian Anne-Marie Pelchat was the surprise women's leader after the elimination round of the Nagano Olympic freestyle skiing moguls competition Sunday. Moseley, the current World Cup leader with three wins in six events, posted the fastest time and the highest points in the air to amass a total score of 26.53 on the Iizuna Kogen course in Nagano. Finland's Janne Lahtela placed second with 25.43 points, followed by compatriot Sami Mustonen in third with 25.16. Defending Olympic and world champion Jean-Luc Brassard of Canada, second behind Moseley on World Cup points, also qualified to the 16-men finals by placing seventh place. Japan's Gota Miura and Daigo Hara squeaked past the elimination round by finishing 15th and 16th, respectively. In the women's competition, Pelchat, ranked only 18th in the World Cup standings with no top 10 finish in six events this season, shared the same points with 1992 Olympic champion Donna Weinbrecht of the United States with 23.35. Pelchat placed higher due to her better showings in three of the five points elements in the moguls competition which made its Olympic debut in the 1992 Albertville Games. Gold medal favorite Candice Gilg of France, who won the 1997 world title on the same Olympic course and current World Cup leader, made a surprise exit from the Nagano Games. She lost balance in landing the first of two jumps and then skied out of the course at the bottom section of the course. Tae Satoya and Aiko Uemura of Japan secured their places in the finals in 12th and 14th places. Both men's and women's moguls finals will be held Wednesday. (Kyodo News)
