Women Preliminary Round
Sweden remains unbeaten alone in women's curling Sweden came from behind to thrash host Japan 12-6 and rolled past Germany 8-3 in a pair of nine-end games Wednesday to remain alone atop the standings of the Olympic women's curling preliminaries. Sweden struggled against Japan early in the match but scored three points in the fifth end to draw up to 4-4. They later added four more each in the seventh and ninth ends to secure the victory at Kazakoshi Park Arena in Karuizawa. Sweden leads with five wins and no losses with two games to go in the round-robin competition while Japan sits in fifth place at 2-3, one win ahead of Germany. Germany notched its first and so far only win by edging Norway 7-6 in 11 ends. Reigning world champion Canada defeated Denmark 9-5 and won 8-3 over Britain to stay on the heels of Sweden with four wins and one loss. Denmark and Britain are in third place at 3-2. In the men's contest, Canada beat winless world silver medalist Germany 10-6 in nine ends to keep a clean slate after four rounds as did Switzerland by breezing 7-2 past the United States in only eight ends. Sweden, the winner at last April's world championships, downed Britain 7-5 for its third win against one loss while Norway stands even at 2-2 after notching a 5-3 win against Japan, handing the host team its third defeat. The top four squads for both men and women advance to the semifinals. (Kyodo News)
