Danish curlers set to win 1st winter Olympic medal The Danish women's curling team grabbed a 6-4 victory over Japan in the final end Thursday to give the small Scandinavian country a berth in the semifinals and two chances to win its first-ever winter Olympics medal. Helena Blach Lavrsen made two excellent shots in the final end to lift Denmark over a stubborn Japanese squad at Kazakoshi Park Arena in the summer resort village of Karuizawa. Japan, saddled with its fourth loss against two wins, fell from contention for a berth in the playoff round in the curling competition making its debut as a full medal sport in the Olympics in Nagano. Meanwhile, in the men's tournament, Norway downed Switzerland 5-4 on the last stone by Eigil Ramsfjell to advance to the semifinals, while the Swiss, helped by Japan's 8-6 win over the United States, also advanced. Japan scored four points in the eighth end to come from behind and secure the win over the U.S. Japan is tied with the U.S. and Britain with two wins and four losses and could advance to a tie-breaker with a win over Germany on Friday and a Swiss win over 3-3 Sweden.
