Bad weather once again delays Alpine program

Bad weather in the Hakuba hills put a wrench into the works of the Olympic Alpine program again Saturday, forcing organizers to make extensive changes in the already unrecognizable skiing schedule.

Heavy rain began falling as skiers set out Saturday morning for the men's super-G and women's downhill at Happo-one, compelling organizers to call off both races.

The men's super-G is now set for Sunday and the women's downhill for Monday.

Organizers also decided to move the downhill portion of the women's Alpine combined competition from Sunday to Monday for a doubleheader at the women's downhill course at Happo-one.

But meteorologists are predicting snow for Sunday, so organizers may be forced to reschedule the men's super-G once again.

Unsteady winter weather in the Japan Alps has been a major problem for the Alpine skiing program -- the Hakuba area has been battered by snow, fog, rain and lightning over the past week.

The first Alpine racing program to go awry was the showcase men's downhill race. Originally set for last Sunday, the first day of full-fledged competition at the current Games, the race eventually took place Friday, after being postponed three times.

Eight days into the Nagano Olympics, organizers have thus far managed to stage only three Alpine events.
