The Canadian women won curling's first Olympic gold medal ever with a 7-5 victory over Denmark on Sunday while the Swiss stunned their Canadian counterparts 9-3 in the men's team final at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games.

The Canadian women, being hailed at Kazakoshi Park Arena as the greatest curling team ever, jumped out to a quick lead with 3 points in the first end and built the score up to 6-2 through six ends and then held on for the gold medal.

''The team is totally ecstatic. We played a strong game throughout, but Denmark really put the pressure on us and made us make good shots,'' said Canadian skip Sandra Schmirler.

Schmirler's team won world championships in 1993 and 1994, and then after a couple of maternity breaks for the team members, they reclaimed the world title at last year's meet in Berne, Switzerland.

Meanwhile, the Danish women received Denmark's first medals ever in the winter Olympics.

In the men's final, the Swiss curlers broke out to a quick 9-1 lead over heavily favored Canada as Canadian skip Mike Harris played only 25 percent of his shots, compared with the 92 percent he played in the semifinal.

In the crucial sixth end, Harris had four Swiss stones in the house, all of them guarded. He attempted to tap a front stone, but could only hit one, so Switzerland went up 9-1.

For the bronze medals, Norway took control of its third-place match early and cruised to a 9-4 win over the United States in the men's contest while Sweden broke open an even match with 4 points in the seventh end to down Britain 10-6 in the women's match.

Norway opened up strongly in the men's third-place final and stole 3 points in the fifth end and then held off a determined U.S. rally to add their country's growing list of Olympic medals.

In the women's bronze medal contest, two-time world champion skip Elisabet Gustafson paced the Swedish effort which hung up 2 points in the first and third ends.

In the decisive seventh end, the Swedes continued to put stones in the house and British skip Kirsty Hay missed with both stones, giving Sweden 4 points and its first medal of the Nagano Games. (Kyodo News)

Norway, Sweden win bronze medals

Norway took control of its third-place match early and cruised to the bronze medal in men's curling while Sweden scored four points in the seventh end to snare the women's bronze Sunday at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games.

Norway opened up strongly against the United States in the men's bronze medal match at Kazakoshi Park Arena and took a 6-0 lead with three stolen points in the fifth end.

U.S. skip Tim Somerville had to draw against four Norwegian stones in the fifth end, but his stone slid too far as Norway claimed another three points.

The Americans came back with three in the sixth, but could not overhaul the steady Norwegians, who added another medal to their country's growing list of Nagano Olympic success.

In the women's bronze medal contest, the Swedish women won their country's first medal of the Nagano Games with a 10-6 triumph over Britain in nine ends.

Two-time world champion skip Elisabet Gustafson paced the Swedish effort which hung up two points in the first and third ends.

In the decisive seventh end, the Swedes continued to put stones in the house and Britain's skip Kirsty Hay missed with both stones, giving Sweden four points. (Kyodo News)
