Annie Perreault of Canada captured the gold medal in the women's 500-meter short track speed skating event of the Nagano Olympic Winter Games on Thursday while favorite Isabelle Charest suffered a crushing blow after falling in the final and being disqualified.

Perreault won the gold medal with a time of 46.568 seconds at the White Ring ice arena in Nagano edging Yang Yang (S) of China who took the silver with a time of 46.627.

Lee Kyung Chun of Korea, the top finisher in the group B final, was awarded the bronze medal when Charest was disqualified for impeding in the group A final and Wang Chunlu did not finish the race.

''This is a great moment in my life, its like a dream. I feel bad for Isabelle. She's the world champion and a great skater but in our sport mistakes like that can happen,'' said Perreault.

Chunlu Wang of China was upended when Charest fell and did not finish the race.

Japan's Ikue Teshigawara, skating in the group B final for 5th-8th place, got off to a slow start and could not catch up to the leaders finishing fourth in 46.889. That later translated into a sixth place finish for the four-time national champion.

In the semifinal of the men's 5000-meter relay, China finished first while Canada came in second to advance to the group A final of Saturday's finals along with Korea and Italy.

Japan's Yugo Shinohara fell, dashing his team's hopes of advancing to the medal final. Instead, Japan will be in group B along with Australia, Britain and the United States.

In the men's 500-meter qualifying round, three Japanese skaters advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.

Gold medal hope Satoru Terao got off to a good start and maintained his lead to finish first advancing to the quarterfinals with a time of 42.948.

Hitoshi Uematsu and Takafumi Nishitani also qualified for the quarterfinals with times of 43.428 and 43.348, respectively. (Kyodo News)
