Mascots: "Snowlets"

The nicknames for the four "Snowlets," the mascots of the Nagano Olympic Winter Games have been selected. They will be known affectionately as "Sukki," "Nokki," "Lekki," and "Tsukki." Together, they are "Snowlets," and they will be working together to promote the Nagano Olympic Games up to the event itself.

The nicknames for the four "Snowlets," the mascots of the Nagano Winter Olympic Games have been selected. They will be known affectionately as "Sukki," "Nokki," "Lekki," and "Tsukki." Together, they are "Snowlets," and they will be working together to promote the Nagano Olympic Games up to the event itself. In response to a request to the public for nickname suggestions, 47,484 nickname proposals were submitted from all over the country. The Subcommittee on Marks of the Nagano Olympics Committee (NAOC) decided on these nicknames because "they are friendly and easy to remember."

Out of the 115 applicants with the names that were finally selected, Mayumi Furuhata (age 12) of Narakawa Village of Kiso Country, Isshin Habu (age 4) of Nanase, Nagano City, Yaeko Okada (age 48) Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Hirokazu Kito (age 6) of Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, were selected for an Excellence Award. Mayumi Furuhata was all smiles and said: "I just wanted to give it a cute name." Yaeko Okada happily said, "The mascot characters are very delightful. They move like Pinocchio, which gave me the inspiration for the name." (originally run January 22, 1994)
