Viewer's guide Completed in December 1992, the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium features the Normal Hill and the Large Hill lined up next one another. Competitors must start their jump within 15 seconds of the signal of the start gate (red and green signal) changing to green, and from a dizzying height the competitors ski down the approach, and takeoff into the air from the kante. The speed reached at that point is more than 80 km/h on the Normal Hill, and around 90 km/h on the Large Hill. The landing zone where the competitors touch down is sloped so as not to provide a shock, and the point at which the sloped zone starts to flatten out is the K point. If this point is exceeded the level of danger increases, but in recent times high level competition continues in which skiers miss out on top places if they do not exceed the K point. Competitors jump twice, and positions are decided by the total score of the points awarded for distance, which looks at the distance jumped, and the points awarded for style, which takes into account degree of perfection and stability in the air. For style, each of the five style judges awards a maximum of 20 points, from which points are subtracted. The highest and lowest of these five scores are discarded, and the total of the other three scores is used as the style score. Distance points are calculated by awarding 60 points for a landing at the critical (K) point, and at Hakuba two points for the Normal Hill (1.8 points for the Large Hill) are added for every meter beyond the K point, and subtracted for every meter before it. For example, if the competitor jumps 125 m on the Large Hill, and the points for style awarded by the judges are 19.5, 19, 18, 18 and 17, the total points for style is the total of these, discarding the highest score of 19.5 and the lowest of 17, giving 55 points. As the competitor exceeded the K point by 5 m, the points for distance is 60 points + 1.8 points x 5 = 69 points. The competitor's overall score is therefore 124 points.
